Fraternity Overview

History of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded on January 9, 1914, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The fraternity was established with the motto "Culture for Service, Service for Humanity," reflecting its commitment to promoting brotherhood, scholarship, and service to humanity.

The Founding

Three distinguished Howard University students—A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown—established Phi Beta Sigma with a vision to create an organization that would be "part of the general community" rather than apart from it. The fraternity was designed to be different from other Greek organizations by emphasizing the true purpose of education: the service and advancement of African American communities and humanity at large.

Growth and Expansion

Over more than a century, Phi Beta Sigma has grown to become one of the most prominent African American fraternities in the world. With chapters on college campuses and in communities across the globe, the fraternity has established itself as a leader in scholastic achievement, community service, and brotherhood. It holds the unique distinction of being the only fraternity constitutionally bound to a sister sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
